Hanwell seeks your support today

As you probably are aware, I am running for a second term on the Cape Henlopen school board. Back in 2016, I remember thinking that five years seemed like a long time to have ahead of me, but I am here to tell you the years have flown by. I now have two grandchildren in Cape schools and a third who is about 4 1/2 years away from kindergarten. As a board member, I have been fortunate to have been a part of some really great things happening in Cape. Strategic planning is now ongoing, our Spanish immersion program continues to grow, test scores have improved, and the opportunity gap is narrowing. We have hired many great teachers, administrators, and support staff reflective of the children we serve, supported professional development in trauma-informed care, restorative practices, and cultural responsiveness, aligned the curriculum across five elementary schools and updated our grading system, provided more opportunities for recognition of staff accomplishments and work efforts, and made great strides in opening the lines of communication. We have also been able to open four new schools (Love Creek, HOB, RES, Sussex Consortium) and continue on our path to complete the rest of the plan (CHHS addition, MES, Shields Elementary, and a new middle school).

Migrating warblers sweep into Indiana Dunes fest as falcons hatch in South Bend

Welcome to the height of migratory bird season, a fleeting time when, if you’re observant, you may spy a bright golden warbler in a tree or bush.
Mid-May is the heavy traveling season for such songbirds. Several species wear an array of yellow, brown, gray and black feathers — among other palettes — with equally colorful names, including Cape May warbler, Nashville warbler, chestnut-sided warbler and magnolia warbler. Not to forget songs and calls as varied as an orchestra’s instruments.
We enjoy this often-hidden spectacle for just a few weeks until they’ve all rushed northward to their summer breeding grounds.

When the people of Earth were told to stay away from one another in 2020, outdoor activities like boating and fishing became much more appealing. As it turns out, they liked it . a lot.
“You have a bunch of people who were never out on the water before and they’re loving it,” said Bev Rosella, co-owner of the local Freedom Boat Club franchise. “Now, they’re telling their friends how great it is.”

Scenic Manor bringing 319 new homes to Mulberry Knoll Road in Lewes

Over 300 new homes are coming to the southern side of Mulberry Knoll Road in Lewes.
It s a bucolic stretch of road off Route 24 that typically sees just 280 vehicles daily, according to a 2019 traffic study. But Scenic Manor, which plans to develop about 167 acres on either side of the road, will bump traffic numbers up over 3,000, according to the same study.
The Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission approved Land Investment, LLC s plan for the 319-home Scenic Manor development on April 22.
But their approval came following an April 8 meeting in which they received a petition with over 500 signatures and heard from about a half-dozen people who oppose the planned development.

ClydeFEST Kicks Off A Season Of Fun In Chatham County

ClydeFEST Kicks Off A Season Of Fun In Chatham County
Siler City’s “Spring Chicken Day,” scheduled for May 1, was felled, for the second year in a row, by COVID-19. The year-long celebration of Chatham County’s 250th anniversary began with a muted, socially-distanced “Founding Day” on Saturday. Shakori Hills’ signature spring event has been postponed.
As North Carolina begins to “open up” after a long pandemic year, organizers of festivals and events in Chatham County are figuring out ways to celebrate and get people together in a safe and logical method. One of the major events on the local spring calendar, for example, is ClydeFEST. It’s still happening, but in a COVID-safe way in lieu of the usual 2,500-person gathering, says April Starling of the Chatham Arts Council.

DelDOT outlines schedule for Route 24 projects

Thursday, March 25, 2021
Twenty-five years ago, state transportation officials were exploring an idea to dualize Route 24 from the Route 113 intersection in Millsboro to the Route 1 intersection near Rehoboth Beach.
And just as with plans to dualize Route 404/9 from the Maryland line to the beaches, the idea was not met with much public support.
“There was major public opposition, so DelDOT abandoned the idea,” said Mark Luszcz, Delaware Department of Transportation deputy director of design.
However, he said, parts of the plan are coming to fruition on the east side of Love Creek bridge with the ongoing Route 24 widening project. East of the bridge, projects are designed to solve increasing traffic-capacity issues, but on the west side, projects are aimed at safety and operational improvements, not major capacity projects, he said.

Cape May-Lewes Ferry updates travel restrictions
The Cape May-Lewes Ferry will allow bicyclists and foot passengers again with capacity restrictions, starting Monday, Feb. 22. According to a Feb. 18 press release, all bicyclists and foot passengers must have a reservation, are required to check in at the ticket counter prior to boarding, and must arrive at least 45 minutes before departure time. The passenger salon aboard the vessels will also be open; however, inside seating capacity is currently limited to about 20 percent. Passengers must wear face masks and stay socially distanced from anyone not in their traveling party. They are urged to pay attention to onboard directional signage to help control the flow of traffic on the vessel. Masks are required in the terminals, on board the vessels, and in outdoor areas while on terminal grounds. Exterior seating is open to all passengers. With appropriate social distancing, passengers will now have access to seating inside the vessel’s passenger salon, and the food court is open. The ferry schedule includes four daily departures from both Cape May and Lewes. Travelers who plan to use the Cape May-Lewes Ferry in the near future are urged to call the Guest Services Center in advance at 800-64-FERRY (800-643-3779). For more information, go to www.cmlf.com.
