The Bay of Plenty was one of six regions in New Zealand that received more firearm-related injury claims in 2020 compared to the previous year.
It comes as ACC, which accepts two million injury claims
each year, equating to more than 5,000 a day, reveals 90 per cent of all injuries were preventable.
There were 46 new gun-related ACC claims for the Bay of Plenty in 2020, the fourth highest of all regions in the country. ....

Pickup rolls into river in Logan Canyon; accident may involve serious injury

A truck rolled from the highway and into the river in Logan Canyon on Saturday evening, according to scanner traffic.
The accident, in the area of Mile 473, may involve serious injuries, with at least one person unresponsive. One of the occupants of the vehicle may have been unresponsive at one point, but later was conscious and walking at the scene. Scanner traffic earlier indicated this person was the driver, but later reports indicated it was the passenger.
The accident was reported shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday.

Abstract
Background: Young drivers of low socioeconomic status (SES) have a disproportionally high risk of crashing compared with their more affluent counterparts. Little is known if this risk persists into adulthood and if it differs between men and women. Methods: We used data from a 2003/2004 Australian survey of young drivers (n=20 806), which included measures of drivers demographics and established crash risk factors. These data were linked to police-reported crash, hospital and death data up to 2016. We used negative binomial regression models to estimate the association between participants SES, with car crash. Results: After adjusting for confounding, drivers of lowest SES had 1.30 (95% CI 1.20 to 1.42), 1.90 (95% CI 1.25 to 2.88), 3.09 (95% CI 2.41 to 3.95) and 2.28 (95% CI 1.85 to 2.82) times higher rate of crash, crash-related hospitalisation, crash in country areas and crash on streets with a speed limit of 80 km/hour or above compared with drivers of highest SE ....
