Celebrations mark Juneteenth with music, food and storytelling

The Emancipation Proclamation was issued in September 1862, but word was slow getting to Texas.
It wasnât until June 19, 1865, just after the Civil War ended, that U.S. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, with the word slaves had been freed.
The first celebrations to mark the date, then known as Jubilee Day, happened on June 19, 1866, and included barbecues, music, prayer services and other activities. Jubilee Day later became Juneteenth.
The tradition of celebrating the day waxed and waned in the South over the years, but recently Juneteenth celebrations have gained popularity nationally.
This Saturday, communities across the Fredericksburg area will take up the custom and host Juneteenth celebrations. ....

COVID-19 News: Local businesses receive funding to expand online presence

In the spring of 2020, two Tiny Township farmers created an online store and delivery service offering local goods.
They dubbed it Farm 2 Door.
The virtual farmers market helps connect local businesses with customers.
Since the start of the pandemic, the federal and provincial governments have invested more than $3 million in the agri-food sector to help businesses establish or bolster their online presence.
In the Simcoe North region, seven businesses received a slice of the pie, including Borrow Family Farm, Fairhope Farm, Carter Farms, Rama Community Farm and Georgian Chocolate Company.
It s really just bringing opportunities directly to our doorsteps and allows us to continue on business and even grow business during these times, says Jenna Green, co-founder of Georgian Chocolate Company. ....

Downtown Greens hopes to buy property adjacent to Braehead Farm in Fredericksburg

Downtown Greens, a community garden in downtown Fredericksburg, has submitted a letter of intent to the Fredericksburg Economic Development Authority to purchase the property adjacent to Braehead Farm in the city s Battlefield Industrial Park.
Sarah Perry, Downtown Greens director, said she and board members toured the property earlier this spring and submitted their letter of intent to the EDA on April 7.
She said the organization sees buying the property as an opportunity to expand its programming in the areas of sustainable agriculture, environmental education and land conservation.Â
We started getting really excited and talking to people who might partner with us to expand [our operation] in this way, she said. We realized that there is a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of people who are interested in saving this piece of propertyâand not just saving it but turning it into this new, beautiful space that the whole community can enjoy. ....
