That’s usually very bad for counties that import a lot of their water. However, Herbon said the San Diego County Water Authority and its member agencies like the city of San Diego have invested millions of dollars in infrastructure improvements over the last 30 years that have given San Diego County enough to withstand any potential water restrictions brought on by drought.
“We do not foresee shortages through 2045,” Herbon said. “That’s the forecast, considering all the projects that the Water Authority and our member agencies plan to implement.”
She cited infrastructure like the East County Advanced Water Purification Program, the Carlsbad Desalination Plant, and the expansion of the San Vicente Reservoir. Herbon said the locally generated water, combined with the storage and future projects should be enough to protect San Diego County from drought restrictions for another 25 years. ....

Carlsbad’s iconic 400-foot-tall smokestack is almost gone, reduced to rubble by the ongoing demolition of the old Encina power plant.
San Diego Gas & Electric Co. built the concrete column in the mid-1970s to replace four smaller smokestacks as part of an upgrade of the 1950s-era plant.
“The 400-foot stack has been demolished to a height of 135 feet,” said Chris Rimel, communications manager for owner NRG, in an email Monday.
“Demolition activities are temporarily on hold but will resume in mid-June with completion by this July,” Rimel said. The work continues inside the power plant building and is scheduled to be completed during the second quarter of 2022. ....

Poseidon Water came a step closer to building its controversial $1.4-billion water desalination plant on Thursday.
Following hours of deliberation, the Santa Ana Regional Water Board agreed to grant Poseidon a wastewater discharge permit that would allow the project adjacent to the AES power station on Newland Street to move ahead.
On Thursday night after a 10-plus hour meeting, the board voted 4-3 to issue the permit, a compromise proposed by board member Daniel Selmi and dubbed “prohibition with an off-ramp.” The permit would allow the company to operate the facility before all of its permits are granted, a process that would more than likely take years to complete. But Poseidon would have to check several boxes on all five of its proposed mitigation projects before the discharge prohibition is lifted. ....
