The global food system is challenged to become sustainable in multiple ways, said Cynthia Rosenzweig, AgMIP Co-Founder and Executive Committee Member, and lead-editor of Volume 5 of the
The latest volume by the Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP) is a milestone for AgMIP as it marks the fruition of a multi-year project funded by the United Kingdom s Department for International Development (UK DFID). The project advanced the field of climate change impacts and adaptation in agriculture through the development of the AgMIP Regional Integrated Assessment (RIA) methodology. The RIA method provides significant improvements to climate change assessments through a stakeholder-driven farming s ....

Why International Women's Day Is Still Relevant in 2021 | Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory

March 8, 2021
By Sarah Fecht
On International Women’s Day, we celebrate the achievements of women. And by “women,” we mean all who identify with that term.
Women bring creativity and critical services to all levels of society, from the home to the office, laboratory, and boardroom. Yet their achievements and contributions often go overlooked, unacknowledged, or even minimized. Today is a reminder to appreciate those who are typically forgotten or pushed to the side.
While we unite on International Women’s Day to celebrate, we also acknowledge that true gender equality does not yet exist anywhere in the world. One in three women will experience gender-based violence in their lifetimes. Women are still paid less than men for the same work, and they do 2.6 times more unpaid care and domestic work. In many countries, women do not have equal access to land, credit or economic and educational opportunities, so when disaster strikes, it’s usually women who ....

Trade restrictions, climate change threaten Nigeria's food supplyNigeria — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

NiMet’s forecast foregrounds food insecurity
Global researchers and agricultural scientists have said that stockpiling and trade restrictions by countries producing major food grains could lead to intercontinental food shortage, hunger and malnutrition for food import-dependent countries.
x
The fear is intensified as the Nigerian Metrological Agency (NiMet) predicted crop failures as climate change induces elongated droughts amid insecurity for farmers, following the inability of armed forces to tame banditry and terrorism.
Hence, experts said Nigeria would become vulnerable, as wheat, maize, rice and other food and industrial crops are in short supply locally.
Affirming the possibility of the food crisis, a grain breeder and Vice-Chancellor of Al-Qalam University, Prof. Shehu Garki Ado, said the COVID-19 pandemic, locust infestations, drought and labour shortages are factors responsible for food supply chain disruptions, t ....

Food export restrictions by a few countries could skyrocket global food crop prices

 E-Mail
Recent events such as the Covid-19 pandemic, locust infestations, drought and labour shortages have disrupted food supply chains, endangering food security in the process. A recent study published in
Nature Food shows that trade restrictions and stockpiling of supplies by a few key countries could create global food price spikes and severe local food shortages during times of threat.
We quantified the potential effects of these co-occurring global and local shocks globally with their impacts on food security, explains Aalto University Associate Professor Matti Kummu. The results of this research have critical implications on how we should prepare for future events like Covid-19, he says. ....
