(Photo courtesy of GM Defense) WASHINGTON — GM Defense has brought on Rick Kewley as its new executive chief engineer, who will be in charge of all engineering and program execution at the General Motors subsidiary, according to a March 10 company statement. Kewley has a long history at GM — a 27-year career — and most recently served as GM’s executive director of Global Product Development Quality.
It has taken the Army more than 20 years to get back to providing light tank capability to its Infantry Brigade Combat Teams (IBCTs). These tanks will be more lethal, easier to maintain, and able to keep up with an IBCT’s new Infantry Squad Vehicle transports. They’ll need to be air transportable via C-17 cargo aircraft, ready to fight upon landing, and capable of learning new combat tricks as they age. After cutting through a number of proposals, only two prototypes remain, one from General Dynamics Land Systems (GD) and another from BAE Systems (BAE). The service eventually wants 504 of these new tanks; an initial 26 will begin production in 2022 after a head-to-head soldier evaluation helps determine a winner.

Developmental testing of the Infantry Squad Vehicle, or ISV, began in November and will culminate in an initial operational test in August, said Steve Herrick, product lead for ground mobility vehicles at the program executive office for combat support and combat service support. The Army received the first batch of its new ISVs in October from GM Defense 120 days after awarding the company a contract. The initial delivery of the vehicles is part of the Army’s effort to fast-track the acquisition of an all-terrain, highly transportable platform intended to provide ground mobility capabilities for infantry brigade combat teams.
