Beef prices, processing need changes

Beef cattle are in a rotational-grazing program at Rush Creek Ranch near Viroqua, Wisconsin. The ranch raises about 7,000 head of cattle. There are about 14,000 beef farms in Wisconsin, according to the Wisconsin Cattleman s Association. About 7,000 dairy farms across the state also contribute to the beef supply chain.

Wisconsin is a major beef-producing state, with an inventory of about 3.5 million head of cattle. The beef industry contributes to Wisconsin’s economy by generating about $1.7 billion in cash receipts for cattle and calves. That s equal to about 15 percent of all Wisconsin agricultural cash receipts, according to the Wisconsin Cattlemen s Association. ....

Livestock groups unite on need to address cattle markets


Cattle producers have faced significant challenges over the last few years. And as Brett Crosby, fifth-generation cattle rancher from Wyoming, explains, 2020 was a tipping point for everybody.
Crosby, who also serves as a board member of the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association, was one of just under two dozen members of the cattle industry who came together May 10 at the request of the Livestock Marketing Association to discuss challenges involved in the marketing of finished cattle with the ultimate goal of bringing about a more financially sustainable situation for cattle feeders and cow-calf producers.
Four meatpacking companies control over 80% of the cattle processing industry. “This simple fact leaves the cattle industry particularly vulnerable to market disruptions,” says Randy Feenstra, R-Iowa, while speaking about the cattle market challenges during a House Agriculture Committee discussion on May 18. ....

Several livestock provisions hidden in year-end spending bill

In the over 5,500 pages of the recent approved appropriations and COVID-relief, there are several nuggets important to those in the livestock sector including certainty that producers can recoup payment losses by establishing a dealer trust, funding for agriculture quarantine inspection services and an extension of Livestock Mandatory Reporting.
Small meat processors
The bill offers expanded resources for state-inspected meat processors through inclusion of the Requiring Assistance to Meat Processors for Upgrading Plants Act, which assists meat and poultry slaughtering and processing facilities with making improvements to allow for interstate shipment. ....
