Rook Evans, age 87, of Marshall, died Sunday, January 24, 2021, at The Arbors at Westport Estates in Marshall. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 29, at First Baptist Church in Marshall, with Dr. Mike Parris and Rev. Wayne Doolin officiating. Burial will follow at Ridge Park Cemetery. Masks are required at all events. There will be no visitation, but friends may stop by Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home to sign the guestbook and pay their respects from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday, January 28. Students described the need to update a course curriculum that treats Black history separately from U.S. history. And when it is Black History Month, participants said there is pressure on Black students to do all the talking. Teachers don t know how to respond, when teens make biased and racist comments in the classroom, students said. Avery Evans, 18 of Newtown, described experiences with school security focusing on her because she is a minority. Security focuses on Black students more than white kids, she said. “We have to be 10 times better because of who we are,” Evans said. “Sometimes, I just want to be myself. But I know that I must try to be perfect. I, somehow, have to be a million times better or present myself perfectly in order for others to respect me.” ....
