Kashmir’s top police official asks media to not come close to encounter sites, avoid live coverage
The media bodies said the direction seems to be part of measures taken by authorities to suppress freedom of press in the region.

Kashmir Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar has asked media to not come close to encounter sites and cases where there is a law and order situation. Confirming the development on Wednesday, Kumar told
Scroll.in he has issued directions to the media and ordered them to not carry live coverage of these incidents.
“The freedom of speech and expression is subject to reasonable restrictions that should not violate other person’s right to life guaranteed under Article 21 or putting the national security in jeopardy,” Kumar said. “Do not interfere in professional and bonafide duty of police and security forces at encounter site.” ....

Srinagar, Indian-administered Kashmir – For young Kashmiri photojournalist, Masrat Zahra, the fear of getting arrested or summoned by police always lurks around. She was charged under anti-terror law, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), in April this year for posting “anti-national” content on social media.
The case, says 26-year-old Zahra, “is like a sword hanging on my head” and was filed “to send a message” that even a young female journalist would not be spared. She is one of the few female journalists in the Muslim-majority region, which was stripped of its special status last August.
Zahra was among several Kashmiri journalists who were summoned by police early this year. ....

SRINAGAR: Three journalists were allegedly thrashed by police personnel while they were covering the District Development Council (DDC) polls in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.
Fayaz Lolu, Mudasir Qadri and Junaid Rafiq also claimed that their equipment was seized by the policemen who took them to a police post after physically assaulting them.
While the Kashmir Press Club (KPC) termed the incident at Srigufwara in Anantnag district as unfortunate and called for a thorough inquiry, the Kashmir Editors Guild (KEG) expressed concern.
Police officials refused to comment on the incident.
We hope strict action is taken against those found guilty in this act perpetrated in utter disregard of the freedom of the press. The KPC further urges the Chief Electoral Officer to take note of such incidents and initiate action against the concerned police official, the KPC said in a statement. ....
