58 countries denounce practice of arbitrary detention

Canada has launched the Declaration Against Arbitrary Detention denouncing state-sponsored arbitrary detention of foreign nationals for political purposes.
The US and 58 other countries have endorsed the non-binding declaration which aims to protect citizens of all countries who live, work and travel abroad.
The declaration, announced by Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau, comes as part of Ottawa s attempts to free two Canadian citizens who have been detained in China since 2018.
Ottawa has said that the declaration is also aimed at the widespread use of the practice abroad, including in North Korea, Iran and Russia. ....

Australia a ‘Strong Advocate’ for Human Rights, Joins Declaration by 55 Nations Against Arbitrary Detention
Australia and 55 other countries, including the United States and the UK, have launched a declaration against the use of arbitrary detention of foreign citizens to obtain political leverage in state-to-state relations.
“We are a strong advocate for promoting and protecting human rights,” Australia’s Foreign Minister Marise Payne said in a video message at 1 a.m. on Feb. 16.
“The right not to be subjected to arbitrary arrest or detention is guaranteed in international law and states must comply with their international human rights law obligations.”
The Canada-led declaration comes in response to arbitrary detention being used by countries as bargaining chips in foreign relations. ....

YANGON A district court in Naypyitaw has postponed a hearing in Myanmar State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s case until Wednesday, despite her initial two-week remand expiring on Monday.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s lawyer U Khin Maung Zaw told the media on Monday morning that he had been informed by the district attorney that the hearing was delayed until Wednesday, when her remand will end.
On Feb. 3, both President U Win Myint and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi were remanded in custody from Feb. 1-15 for further investigation by the Dekkhina District Court in Naypyitaw. ....
