City makes organizational changes

The City of Kingston has made a number of organizational changes aimed at providing continuity of service, adding focus to key initiatives outlined in the 2019-2022 Strategic Plan and supporting Kingston through the pandemic and its recovery.  The changes below go into effect on May 10.
To better target services supporting the arts, culture and heritage-related needs of our community, the City will reframe its Cultural Services department as Arts & Culture Services and create a new Heritage Services department.
To assist with pandemic recovery and implement a number of economic development strategies, resources will be added to the Office of Strategy, Innovation and Partnerships – including the addition of a new Rural Economic & Community Development Manager. ....

Cher-Mère's Aba Mortley wins Canada grant pitch competition

WHEN Dr Aba Mortley opened her first Cher-Mère Day Spa in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, she was continuing her family s beauty business legacy from Trinidad. And last month she continued to make that legacy proud when she won her category in the Rise Up Pitch Competition, an online black Canadian business competition, and secured a covid19 innovation grant.
According to the Rise Up website, the competition is an opportunity for Black women entrepreneurs, at any stage of business, to shine and pitch for the chance to win thousands of dollars in financial awards and resources. ....

Small business property owners: Apply by March 22 for tax deferral program

The City has re-launched a tax deferral program aimed at providing financial relief to small business property owners who have been impacted by COVID-19.
First piloted in 2020, the Small Business Property Owner Tax Deferral program, offers owners of commercial properties with a total assessed value of $2 million or less, as well as all hotels and motels, the opportunity to apply to defer their final property tax bills from the March 31 deadline to Sept. 30.
“The deferral program was developed in consultation with members of the Kingston Economic Recovery Team, and it is just one of the many ways the City is supporting our small business community during this challenging time,” says Mayor Bryan Paterson. ....

A city-created website for people interested in moving to Kingston has introduced three new tools with which employers and job seekers can connect.
The “Possible Made Here” website (www.possiblemadehere.org) now has a job board (www.possiblemadehere.org/jobs) that brings together the listings from 30 job sites under one click, an interactive map that shows where posted jobs are located in the city and surrounding area (www.possiblemadehere.org/map), and a “career explorer” offering current job listings and median salaries (www.possiblemadehere.org/career-explorer). ....
