Johnson City ponders putting surveillance cameras downtown

Between 2018 and 2020, 64 simple assaults, 39 aggravated assaults and 34 acts of shoplifting have occurred in Johnson Cityâs downtown area.
As a deterrent against future crimes and to preserve public spaces, the city is now considering whether to install video surveillance downtown.
Members of the cityâs staff presented a plan to commissioners on Thursday. Under that proposal, cameras would be positioned to cover East Main Street, Spring Street, Tipton Street, the downtown breezeway at 216 E. Main St. and the Downtown Square and Cherry Street parking lots.
Commissioners did not take action on the proposal.
Under the option recently presented to commissioners, staff expects the total cost of installation would be about $73,000. ....

Fridays After 5 will bring music back to downtown Johnson City

Live music will soon return to downtown Johnson City.
Formerly known as Founders After 5, a rebranded version of the music event called Fridays After 5 will begin this June and run through September, occurring from 6-8 p.m. most Fridays.
The event is moving from its traditional home in Founders Park to King Commons Park. Connect Downtown Johnson City, part of the Johnson City Development Authority, is organizing the event.
Lindsey Jones, the authorityâs marketing manager, said Founders After 5 could get fairly busy, typically seeing an average of 500 to 600 people in attendance each week.
âWeâre expecting after a year of no fun in 2020 that people are going to be eager to get out, listen to live music again,â Jones said, âso weâre expecting larger crowds than normal.â ....

Johnson City nears completion on 150th legacy project

A permanent fixture of Johnson Cityâs sesquicentennial celebration is nearing completion.
Public Works Director Phil Pindzola expects construction on the history circle in King Commons Park, which is part of the larger legacy project, will likely wrap up next week.
The project was concealed under a tent on Thursday, where crews were installing the elements that will ultimately make up the circle.
Once complete, the history circle will consist of a series of concentric rings featuring blocks engraved with key dates and information about Johnson Cityâs history. A trio of tall passion flowers with bright filaments currently sit in the center of the circle. ....
