Downtown Yoga Festival coming to Johnson City this weekend

After more than a year of postponements and cancellations, festivals and events are slowly making their way back to Johnson City — including some newcomers — like Saturday’s Downtown Yoga Festival — that aim to be more than a one-off event.
Festival organizer and Downtown Yoga Center owner Kim Blaine said the festival was made possible by a grant from the Blue Plum Organization’s Blue Plum Gives Back program. The program aims to “support public programs, events and initiatives that stimulate art, music and culture in downtown Johnson City” by offering $20,000 in small grants to those who host a festival in June. ....

Fridays After 5 will bring music back to downtown Johnson City

Live music will soon return to downtown Johnson City.
Formerly known as Founders After 5, a rebranded version of the music event called Fridays After 5 will begin this June and run through September, occurring from 6-8 p.m. most Fridays.
The event is moving from its traditional home in Founders Park to King Commons Park. Connect Downtown Johnson City, part of the Johnson City Development Authority, is organizing the event.
Lindsey Jones, the authority’s marketing manager, said Founders After 5 could get fairly busy, typically seeing an average of 500 to 600 people in attendance each week.
“We’re expecting after a year of no fun in 2020 that people are going to be eager to get out, listen to live music again,” Jones said, “so we’re expecting larger crowds than normal.” ....

Blue Plum Festival a no-go for 2021; organizers give back instead

The Blue Plum Organization announced Thursday that it will not host its annual Blue Plum Festival this year due to continuing concerns related to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
In its place, the organization will offer $20,000 worth of small grants through its Blue Plum Gives Back program to “support public programs, events and initiatives that stimulate art, music and culture in Downtown Johnson City.” Last year’s festival was also canceled because of the pandemic.
“The Blue Plum Organization had really hoped to be able to bring the festival back this summer, but for a festival the size of ours, planning begins 9 months ahead of time,” Board President Jenny Lockmiller, said in an emailed statement. “There were too many unknowns for the all-volunteer organization this winter, without knowing what the pandemic numbers would be in June. But the Gives Back program is a way that our board felt we could support downtown businesses and o ....

JCP Week in Review: February 19, 2021

Tennessee reported 780 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, the second consecutive day the state reported fewer than 1,000 new cases, and the first time that’s occurred since September of last year.
It’s been 141 days since Tennessee last reported back-to-back days under 1,000 new infections, and more than five months since it reported three straight days under that mark. The state’s average number of new infections over the past seven days, meanwhile, has dropped to 1,416 per day, the lowest rate since Oct. 4. That average hasn’t fallen below 1,000 since June.
Northeast Tennessee reported a net increase of 102 infections on Wednesday, with Hawkins, Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington Counties each adding more than 10 new cases. Active cases saw an overall decline of five, though three counties (Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington) reported an increase in active cases. ....
