PESHAWAR: Serious irregularities and misappropriation of Rs 1804 million have been detected in the audit report of the Institute of Kidney Diseases (IKD) Peshawar from 2018 to 2020. The Director Genral Audit Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as prepared 30 advanced audit paras in February 2021 and submitted its report. The lapse occurred due to weak internal controls over the affairs of management of the institution. Audit recommends the matter to be enquired at an appropriate level for fixing responsibility, recovery of the loss sustained to the government along overhauling the record of other procurements. The audit report also revealed illegal recruitments as opposed to merit. According to records, Dr. Nasir Orakzai was the director of the hospital at the time. ....

Patients suffering from kidney disease in Punjab have to put up with harrowing experiences just to stay alive. The people afflicted with renal failure have only one option: to undergo continuous dialysis.
However, this is easier said than done. Owing to an increase in kidney disease in Pakistan, there is a perennial rush at government hospitals for dialysis as it is mostly free for patients whereas the same procedure in a private hospital costs thousands of rupees for a single session.
Some renal patients have to undergo dialysis twice, sometimes thrice a week which translates into big sums of money being spent just to stay alive. It should be noted that at present there is an extraordinary rush of patients in all government and nongovernment dialysis centres, making it next to impossible for patients to schedule dialysis treatment. ....

Kidney patients at higher risk for severe Covid-19

The Ministry of Public Health has issued a set of guidelines for patients with kidney disease or who have undergone a kidney transplant.
The Ministry has said that adults and children with kidney disease or other severe chronic medical conditions seem to be at higher risk for more serious COVID-19 illness.
On its social media accounts, the Ministry has insisted that because of the increased risk for kidney patients, it is especially important to take actions to reduce risk of exposure. “It is thought that you are at increased risk of severe illness if you contract the virus and it is very important that you are particularly stringent in following the physical distancing measures,” said the Ministry. “For early stage kidney patients or transplant recipients, contact your health care professional or nephrologist with any questions or concerns,” it added. ....
