Novel protein construct prevents lethal COVID-19 in mice
Researchers in the United States have developed a novel protein that prevented lethal disease among mice infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) – the agent that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
The team engineered a soluble, short, and dimeric version of the native host cell receptor that is bound by a surface structure on SARS-CoV-2 called spike during the initial stage of the infection process.
The team – from the Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, the University of Chicago, and Northwestern University in Evanston – suspected that a soluble, truncated version of this membrane-bound receptor – called angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) – would serve as a decoy for SARS-CoV-2 spike binding and potentially neutralize infection. ....

Carlos and June Riquinha have been a couple since they met at the age of 14. He had entered a talent show at the Jireh Swift School on Lund s Corner New Bedford. June was in the audience with her grandmother the first time she saw him. They got married as soon as they turned 18.
Carlos entered the landscaping industry in the 1980s and has been working at it ever since, although his work drifted away from the field and into the office more as he progressed through the years.
About a year and a half ago, Carlos was diagnosed with kidney failure. In order to live, he would need to go on kidney dialysis immediately. The treatment can be brutal and isn t a sustainable solution for the rest of his life. ....

He lives with his wife of 42 years, Eileen, has four children and nine grandchildren, with twins on the way to make it 11. He s retired, too, but owned a freight forwarding business.

My name is Anthony (Tony) Matarazzo and I’m asking for your help. I was born in Paterson, N.J. and grew up in Hawthorne. I was diagnosed with hypertension at age 40, and at nearly the same time began to have problems with gout and kidney stones. I had many gout and kidney stone attacks in my 40s until the doctors got me stabilized with the right medications. As is the case with other chronic kidney disease patients, the combination of hypertension and kidney stones is deadly for the kidneys. ....
