A fried finger food, wild onion cicada nibblers, features the bug-eyed insects.
The first reports of Pennsylvanians spotting emerged Brood X, 17-year periodical cicadas began to surface in the past few days, not just the holes from which they are about to emerge or some of the grubs under a log someone moved, but actual cicadas on the sides of trees or shrubs.
The singing or buzzing, which usually follows emergence by 5 days or so, will begin this week in many spots throughout central Pennsylvania. ....

A relatively small but environmentally and recreationally important piece of ground has been added to Kings Gap Environmental Education Center in Cumberland County.
Known as the Sutton Tract, the 68 acres contain several vernal pools, Kings Gap Hollow Run and the native brook trout stream that runs through it, and the potential for more accessible hiking opportunities at the state park site. ....

Pennsylvania’s Trail of the Year for 2021, the 38-mile Delaware & Hudson Trail in Lackawanna, Susquehanna and Wayne counties, will appear on many lists of prime trails this year. Tracing the former corridor of the Delaware & Hudson Railway, which primarily carried anthracite coal out of the Lackawanna Valley during the second half of the 19th century, the D&H Trail is open to motorized and non-motorized users, including walkers, bikers, equestrians as well as snowmobilers.
And, in that same vein, the Trail of the Year in 2020 was the 46-mile Ghost Town Trail in Cambria and Indiana counties as Pennsylvania’s Trail of the Year. Launched in 1994 as a 12-mile segment, Ghost Town Trail was the first trail in the state constructed with transportation enhancement funding.
