New homes in back garden of Rutland House on Park Road

THE back garden of another Winchester Edwardian home is set to be developed.
Rutland House on Park Road is one of the last on the road to see a back-land development.
Alfred Homes has proposed three detached houses on the back garden next to the Kings Barton development.
Originally four houses were approved but Alfred Homes have altered the scheme which attracted opposition from the City of Winchester Trust and 13 households, citing overdevelopment, lack of open space and dangerous access. The trust objected because of a lack of information.
Objector Mrs Hayley Burnley said the proposed homes were taller than previously, adding: to say the neighbours were consulted about this is untrue and disingenuous of Chris Rees to say otherwise.” ....

Ian Tait queries empty council-owned house in Cross Street

Ian Tait is standing as an independent candidate at the polls on Thursday May 6.
For 20 years he was a Conservative city councillor until 2019 and served on the planning committee for most of his time on the council.
He was the only elected councillor to back the Barton Farm development now called Kings Barton, citing the main reason as the 800 homes in the 2,000-dwelling development would be for people on the city council waiting list.
This week Mr Tait said the property on Tower Street, less than a minute s walk from the High Street, has been empty for years.
He said: “For every empty house there always seems to be an intriguing story but what I can t understand is when Council-owned properties are left empty. Number 16 Tower Street, for example, has been vacant for over three years yet it’s in a perfect location. ....

Groups form alliance to fight new town proposals at Royaldown and Micheldever

WINCHESTER countryside campaigners have formed a new alliance to fight plans for local new towns.
Three Winchester campaign groups have united to oppose building new towns as a way of delivering housing targets.
The Countryside Charity CPRE Hampshire, Save South Winchester Campaign Group (SSWCG) and the Dever Society are urging Winchester City Council to reject building new towns in their new Local Plan.
The city council published ‘Your Place Your Plan: Strategic Issues and Priorities Consultation’, the first opportunity for Winchester residents to have their say on the new Local Plan, the blueprint for development until 2038. New towns are one of four housing options proposed. ....

Concerns for users of bridge by new Kings Barton estate

CONCERNS have been raised about safety at a bridge near Winchester where a school bus crashed last September.
Several children were hurt when a bus struck the railway bridge on Well House Lane; but now councillors have said they are worried about other road users.
The area is now increasingly used by the public as the nearby Barton Farm/Kings Barton estate grows.
A set of traffic lights should have been installed there on the completion of the 200th house and now the estate has nearly 300 being lived in of the proposed 2,000 homes.
Cllr Jackie Porter told the Kings Barton Forum: It really does seem to need traffic lights system putting in. There are now nearly 300 houses. It feels like Groundhog Day, we have been discussing this for a year. We are seeing more and more people running, walking, cycling through that route. ....
