One textbook chapter turned Naseem Rangwala into someone intent on studying the mysteries of the universe. Today she does just that, as project scientist for NASA’s flying telescope, the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy.
Naseem Rangwala can’t think of a single unmarried woman from the small community where she grew up who moved abroad in pursuit of a career. But then, one day, she pulled up her roots from her hometown in India and made her way to NASA. ....

What motivated you to volunteer as a NASA citizen scientist? How did you learn about NASA citizen science? Have you had to be creative to secure adequate computer or internet access?
Before I was a physics major in undergrad, I was really interested in astronomy and space, and I liked to keep up with everything NASA was doing. I remember reading an article about Backyard Worlds: Planet 9, a new NASA citizen science project that was getting ready to be launched where you could discover new objects in space, and that seemed really cool to me. I made an alarm for the day the project launched and got to working on it that very day. Within two weeks of the project launch, I had changed my major to physics and was spending every minute of free time classifying objects! ....

What motivated you to volunteer as a NASA citizen scientist? How did you learn about NASA citizen science?
I was fortunate enough to be contacted by Dr. Stephen Mende from UC Berkeley, an esteemed space physicist who found a blog post of mine about subauroral arcs, or Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement (STEVE), that I was photographing. He and I had several chats over the phone, and he ended up loaning me a special spectra lens that once flew on one of the space shuttles to photograph these arcs. He can, in turn, use the images I capture to make interpretations, etc. ....

Nasa s experimental Mars helicopter rose from the dusty red surface into the planet s thin air on Monday, achieving the first powered flight on another planet.
The triumph was hailed as a Wright Brothers moment. The mini 1.8-kilogram copter named Ingenuity, in fact, carried a bit of wing fabric from the 1903 Wright Flyer, which made similar history at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
Altimeter data confirms that Ingenuity has performed its first flight, the first flight of a powered aircraft on another planet, said the helicopter s chief pilot back on Earth, Havard Grip, his voice breaking as his teammates erupted in cheers. ....

New York, April 17 (IANS) The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), to be launched this October, could feasibly detect ammonia around six gas dwarf planets after just a few orbits, thus detecting a potential signature of life on other planets in as little as 60 hours.
