Sydney solar and wind forecasting start-up seeks funds to tap booming global market

28 April 2021
The Sydney-based company behind an Australian made technology that helps forecast and optimise the output of large-scale wind and solar projects is seeking to raise to up to $5 million to accelerate its international expansion.
Fulcrum3D said on Wednesday that it was working with advisory firm Energy Estate to tap investors for $A3-5 million to increase its market reach and capitalise on the global renewable energy boom – particularly in the US, where a renewables friendly government has taken the wheel.
The company first launched its ARENA-backed advanced cloud tracking system on the Australian market in mid-2016, where it was soon been applied to major commercial and grid-scale projects, including the 25MW Katherine Solar Farm in the Northern Territory. ....

Demand for rare-earth metals is skyrocketing, so we're creating a safer, cleaner way to recover them from old phones and laptops

Rare-earth metals are critical to the high-tech society we live in as an essential component of mobile phones, computers and many other everyday devices. But increasing demand and limited global supply means we must urgently find a way to recover these metals efficiently from discarded products.
Rare-earth metals are currently mined or recovered via traditional e-waste recycling. But there are drawbacks, including high cost, environmental damage, pollution and risks to human safety. This is where our ongoing research comes in.
Our team in collaboration with the research centre Tecnalia in Spain has developed a way to use environmentally friendly chemicals to recover rare-earth metals. It involves a process called “electrodeposition”, in which a low electric current causes the metals to deposit on a desired surface. ....

Wind and solar projects join grid in record numbers, and connection queues grow

17 February 2021
The Australian Energy Market Operator has reported record levels of new projects and megawatts of wind and solar coming into the main grid in the last year, and also reveals there are nearly 10 times as many projects queuing for a spot on the network.
In its latest “State of the Systems” report, a new publication designed to enhance visibility of the workings of the often contentious grid connection process, AEMO says that 12 new wind and solar generators with a total capacity of 1,560MW completed their commissioning in 2020, and are now in commercial operation.
But in a sign of the delays being experienced in some regions, it also notes that another 32 generators with a total capacity of 3,301MW had successfully completed the connections process and registered, meaning they were mechanically complete and compliant, but were yet to enter commercial operation. This was expected to occur in “coming weeks and months.” ....

Tasmania declares itself 100 per cent powered by renewable electricity

Dimanche, 10 Janvier, 2021 - 21:35
The Tasmanian government has declared that it has become the first Australian state, and one of just a handful of jurisdictions worldwide, to be powered entirely by renewable electricity.
In a statement released on Friday, Tasmanian energy minister Guy Barnett said that state had effectively become entirely self-sufficient for supplies of renewable electricity, provided by the state’s wind and hydroelectricity projects.
“We have reached 100 per cent thanks to our commitment to realising Tasmania’s renewable energy potential through our nation-leading energy policies and making Tasmania attractive for industry investment, which in turn is creating jobs across the State, particularly in our regions,” Barnett said. ....
