Mattiello portrait at State House planned to cost $22,000

What do we know about the portrait?
Mattiello s predecessor, Gordon Fox, who went to prison for taking bribes, did not request a portrait, and no one has suggested making one.
Murphy s portrait was done in 2010 by Framingham-based painter Ben Aronson at a cost to the state of $19,000, according to a previously published report.
Aronson has been commissioned to paint Mattiello s portrait as well, according to a contract provided by House spokesman Larry Berman in response to a Journal inquiry.
The budgeted cost: $22,000, which is less than half the amount the state has committed to paying for former Gov. Gina Raimondo s portrait. ....

WARWICK, R.I. The Rhode Island House of Representatives voted 63 to 9 Tuesday night to change the name of Theodore Francis Green airport, better known as T.F. Green airport.
But don’t worry: It’s not a big change.
Airlines have suggested for years that including a geographic identifier to the airport’s name could help boost tourism to the state. Speaker Pro Tempore Brian Patrick Kennedy recently introduced legislation to do so, and most state representatives voted in favor of changing the airport’s name to Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport. (”Rhode Island International Airport” was also in the running, but didn’t make the cut.) ....

RI lawmakers OK longer name for 'T.F. Green airport'

So the longer Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport was proposed, although that idea also faced opposition.
Rep. Charlene Lima, a Cranston Democrat and critic of current airport leadership, argued that the name should reflect the state s largest city and airport call letters: PVD.
No airport in a country of over 5,000 airports is named after their state and for a good reason, a good economically sound reason, Lima said. This is going to be an embarrassment across the country.
Lima also questioned the cost of the name change, which the airport is covering. She proposed an amendment that would require the airport to annually report any and all costs connected to the name change. It was defeated 17-47. ....

Jason Rocha Sr., co-founder of the Formerly Incarcerated Union of RI, was among the advocates at Thursday s State House rally calling on legislators to act on racially just cannabis legislation.
While two proposals to legalize recreational marijuana both envision retail stores opening next spring, chances are only the state’s medical marijuana dispensaries would be ready by then to add adult-use cannabis to their shelves, lawmakers say.
With the legislative clock ticking, complex elements of both the governor’s plan and the Senate leadership’s proposal are still in discussions. ....

Then there is the matter of “social equity”: what financial incentives the state will offer people of color who want to enter the lucrative industry.
Advocates argue that communities of color, disproportionally hurt by decades of marijuana criminalization, deserve help raising capital and should have a percentage of new retail licenses reserved for them.
And though the governor s proposal includes 20% of new licenses designated for minority owned businesses and the Senate bill establishes a social equity fund from marijuana business fees for disadvantaged applicants to enter the industry advocates say neither bill goes far enough.
A runway for social-equity applicants ....
