The websites of about 200 public and private entities in Belgium were knocked fully or partially offline Tuesday by a distributed denial-of-service attack against the publicly funded internet service provider Belnet.
Belnet says the DDoS attack, which began at 11 a.m. local time Tuesday, affected government, academic and research institutions. The attack struck websites using the .be domain. Victims included the Belgian COVID-19 vaccine sign-up program in the city of Brussels, according to The Brussels Times, which said some affected websites were still down on Wednesday.
Our teams have successfully implemented several mitigation rules. The effect of the attack seems to be diminishing, Belnet reported on Tuesday. We are constantly monitoring our network to counter any new ....

Policy Group Calls for Public-Private Cyber-Defense Program
The proposed National Cyber Response Network would link federal agencies, companies, and local governments, allowing collaboration during a cyberattack.
Creating plausible scenarios of cyberattacks launched by nations such as China or Iran, or by domestic terrorists and hacktivists, a policy group has concluded that too many roadblocks hinder the effective response to a major attack on US government agencies or private industry.
In a report published last week, the New York Cyber Task Force (NYCTF) a group of policy makers, private industry, and consultants recommended that the United States create a National Cyber Response Network, linking together existing government and industry groups into collaborative network that could speed response to any attack. The task force, sponsored by Columbia University s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), brings together government cyber experts, policym ....

More SolarWinds Attack Details Emerge
A third piece of malware is uncovered, but there are still plenty of unknowns about the epic attacks purportedly out of Russia.
As yet another piece of malware has been uncovered in the attack on SolarWinds network management system software, there still remain several missing elements needed to draw a complete picture of the massive cyberattacks against major US government agencies and corporations, including security vendor and incident response expert FireEye.
SolarWinds and CrowdStrike this week detailed a third malware tool dubbed Sunspot that was found in the attack on the software vendor. Sunspot is a custom program that inserted the so-called Sunburst backdoor into the software build environment of SolarWinds Orion network management product. CrowdStrike, which analyzed Sunspot on behalf of SolarWinds, says the tool was carefully planted somehow by the attackers and kept hidden from SolarWinds developers with sophistic ....
