On day three of the New Plymouth District Council hearings on its draft $3 billion 10-year spending plan, there was little support for one of the most controversial ideas – the introduction of water meters to 26,000 homes. If approved, the $18 million installation job would start in July. Real bills won’t start arriving for a year, with residents only receiving mock bills while they get used to having to watch their water use. HOW refreshing it is to see common sense at last in the debate about youth crime in Queensland. The people of Queensland are crying out for real action to be taken on youth crime, not just the usual platitudes around election time. These actions must start at the cradle with well-trained and experienced child safety officers supported by the police and the courts. Children growing up in an abusive environment will turn to crime and so the cycle repeats itself. If necessary, children should be removed from abusive or drug-fuelled environments. Children are our future and sadly we are failing to give these young people the necessary assistance to create a good life for the future. ....
The cadets of 2385 Squadron ATC in Melksham at their sole meeting between lockdowns in December AIR cadets at risk of being left isolated and lonely by three successive lockdowns are staying connected with their comrades thanks to a coronavirus fund grant. Wiltshire Community Foundation has awarded 2385 Squadron ATC in Melksham £2,600 from its Coronavirus Response and Recovery Fund to buy laptops and tablets for volunteers to help with virtual parades online. Commanding officer Greg McKay, who has led the squadron for five years, said: “The grant has been really helpful because it has allowed us to get more volunteers leading the meetings. We have been training them to start planning and leading the meetings,” he said. ....
