Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards will call a special election on March 20 to fill the 5th Congressional District seat of the late Luke Letlow, who died Tuesday from COVID-19 complications, Edwards office said Wednesday. Letlow, 41, had been elected to replace incumbent Congressman Ralph Abraham, R-Alto, who didn t seek reelection to honor a three-term limit pledge he made in 2014. Louisiana Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin said he spoke to Edwards late Tuesday night to discuss options. Ardoin said the special election will likely be combined with a 2nd Congressional District election to replace outgoing U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-New Orleans, who will vacate his seat to join the leadership team of President-elect Joe Biden. ....
Former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards has been hospitalized in Shreveport at Ochsner LSU Health Medical Center to undergo tests for non-COVID, non-emergency issues. The tests are related to respiratory and heart issues. He was hospitalized in November in Baton Rouge, where he was treated for pneumonia. Edwards, 93, Louisiana s only four-term governor, was flown from Baton Rouge to Shreveport in energy and trucking mogul James Davison s jet. LSU Health Sciences Chancellor G.E. Ghali said late Saturday Edwards was doing very well. He was slightly dehydrated but much improved, Ghali said. His family released the following statement: “Former Gov. Edwin Edwards is undergoing a battery of tests this weekend at Ochsner LSU Health Medical Center in Shreveport for non-Covid related issues. The 93-year-old former governor, congressman and U.S. Navy pilot said he’s feeling fine. His wife, Trina Edwards, says her husband is back in for a checkup in Shreveport wher ....
Louisiana Congressman-elect Luke Letlow has been transferred to the intensive care unit at Ochsner LSU Health in Shreveport to continue treatment for COVID-19, his spokesman told USA Today Network Wednesday. Congressman-elect Luke Letlow has been transferred from St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe to Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport Academic Medical Center in Shreveport as he continues to undergo treatment for COVID-19, Letlow representative Andrew Bautsch said in a statement. The Letlow family is deeply appreciative of the medical team at St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe for their fantastic care, and is thankful for all of the prayers and support they continue to receive, he said. ....
Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards will renew an order this week keeping his mask mandate and other COVID-19 restrictions in place into 2021 as the state continues administering its first vaccines to hospital workers and nursing home residents. Edwards said his modified Phase 2 proclamation, which was to expire Wednesday, will be renewed for 21 days to battle an ongoing third surge of the infection in Louisiana. The state remains in a perilous situation, Edwards said Tuesday during a press conference. It appears we re starting to plateau, but at a very high level. The new proclamation will keep 50% occupancy limits for restaurants and most other retailers and the existing restrictions on bars. ....
