Exclusive research: The high streets most at risk
Local Data Company shows which locations will be worst hit by the closures of John Lewis, Debenhams and Arcadia Group stores.
Out of the eight locations, Aberdeen and York have had the highest number of high-profile store closures between March 2018 and March 2021, exclusive research compiled for Drapers by Local Data Company shows. Both cities witnessed 17 “high-profile” retail closures each during the two-year period. Of the 17, nine were clothing retailers or department stores, including Debenhams, Topshop, Oasis, Cath Kidston, Dorothy Perkins, Monsoon, Warehouse and TM Lewin (see other affected store locations below).
“The closures of John Lewis, coupled with the Debenhams and Arcadia closures, means there’s less critical mass of retailers in city centres, which means there’s less reasons to go shopping in city centres, and more reasons to shop locally,” the CEO of a high street multiple said. ....

Dundee publican urges Holyrood to reconsider 'negative' parliamentary bill

A Dundee publican has urged politicians to reconsider a parliamentary bill he believes will have a negative impact on the business.
Craig McLaughlin, who runs The Admiral bar on Camperdown Road, has spoken out to oppose the Tied Pubs (Scotland) Bill which is currently passing through the Scottish Parliament.
He describes the legislation, which would introduce additional regulations to commercial partnerships between a pub tenant, pub company and building owner, as “taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut”.
Craig and nine other Dundee pub tenants have now written to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon asking for the bill to be reconsidered. ....
