Glasgow archives: The city cemetery modelled on Paris graveyard

HIGH on the hill next to Glasgow Cathedral, the Necropolis is an atmospheric site.
It has seen 50,000 burials since it opened in 1833. As well as the interment registers, the City Archives hold the financial and lair records for the cemetery, and the Merchants House Committee books, giving unique insight into the history and development of this famous graveyard. It passed into the care of the council in 1966 and has become a popular tourist attraction.
It’s the final resting place for many notable Glaswegians from publisher William Collins and philanthropist Isabella Ure Elder to the men killed in the 1960 Cheapside Street and 1972 Kilbirnie Street fires. Monuments include designs by Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson and Charles Rennie Macintosh. The first burial was Joseph Levi a jeweller, in the Jewish section, and burials of other faiths from Quakers to Catholics have followed. ....

Obituary: Charlie Duncan, larger-than-life newspaper executive

Died: January 16, 2021
CHARLIE Duncan, who has died aged 77, was a journalist and newspaper executive who worked at the heart of Scottish tabloid journalism when it was at the height of its dominance and success in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s: on some days, the Daily Record, where he was night editor, could be selling close to a million copies.
The job of night editor was one of the most important on a big-selling tabloid. Working back-shifts, Charlie was in charge of getting the paper to press and would often have to tear up most of the pages when a big story broke and had to redesign the whole thing. This he could do quickly, efficiently and with flair; he could also inspire his team of sub-editors: deadlines were sacrosanct and when things got tight, he’d call for “ramming speed”. ....

From the Apollo archives – Gavin Stamp on the sorry saga of Edinburgh's Royal High School

Edinburgh City Council recently announced plans to reconsider the future use of Thomas Hamilton’s Royal High School on Calton Hill, ending a deal with developers who had pledged in 2009 to find a sustainable purpose for the building. The High School, a masterpiece of the Scottish Greek Revival, has long lain empty; in 2015 plans to transform it into a luxury hotel were widely condemned by heritage groups and the public, and last year
the Scottish Government rejected a revised proposal.
The council’s decision has been welcomed by the Royal High School Preservation Trust, which since 2015 has campaigned for the building to become a new home for St Mary’s Music School. The trust is likely to make a bid to take over the site, while the hotel developers have yet to confirm whether they will submit a further proposal. In the April 2015 issue of Apollo, Gavin Stamp discussed the significance of Hamilton’s building and lamented that it might become a hotel; an adapte ....
