East Bay SM Jim Siemons, W6LK, Stepping Down; Mike Patterson, N6JGA, Appointed

ARRL East Bay Section Manager Jim Siemons, W6LK, is stepping down because he is relocating to Wyoming. Siemons has served as East Bay SM since July 2018. Mike Patterson, N6JGA, has been appointed to succeed him, effective June 1.
Siemons said, “There really is not a greater honor for a ham like me than to watch so many people get their licenses, learn the code, program a radio for the first time, win some ‘wallpaper,’ or just enjoy each other’s company over a cup of coffee. I get to constantly witness this as SM. ARRL afforded me the opportunity to have experiences and gain memories that will last me forever!” ....

Carletta Rainey is achieving a lifelong dream of completing her bachelor’s degree as she graduates this month from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock with a bachelor’s degree in applied communication.
Rainey works as a nurse at the UAMS Women’s Health Clinic and is a U.S. Army veteran who has served overseas in South Korea and Kuwait.
“As a transfer student who stopped out for many years, she came to UA Little Rock in 2019,” said Dr. April Chatham-Carpenter, chair of the Department of Applied Communication. “Facing the odds against her with a recent cancer diagnosis, she has overcome these odds to complete her education.” ....

UA Little Rock Launches Leadership Academy to Provide Professional Development Opportunities for Business Community

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock has launched a new Leadership Academy to provide customized and affordable professional development training for local businesses and organizations.
The Leadership Academy provides leadership development to support professional growth within the organization. The Leadership Academy offers a variety of training in areas including business decision-making, personnel management, and communication. Courses are offered in person or in hybrid learning.
“The need for the Leadership Academy came from the industry,” said Dr. Otmar Varela, director of the Leadership Academy and professor of management. “After conducting several focus groups last year with local business experts in leadership development, we realized the need for the academy. We believe this program offers a tremendous opportunity to provide unique training for the business community.” ....

UA Little Rock Alum Marquese McFerguson is using spoken word poetry and hip-hop to make a difference

Spoken word poetry became a lifeline for UA Little Rock alumnus Marquese McFerguson, an assistant professor of intercultural communication at Florida Atlantic University, to express his thoughts and emotions during the turbulent time following the death of his mother in 2005.
“During my final semester of undergrad studies, my mother passed away,” McFerguson said. “She had been battling cancer. It was a time in my life when I was a senior in college, and I questioned whether I would be going back to finish college. You don’t meet many 21-year-olds who don’t have a living parent. I started writing and journaling to process my emotions.” ....
