Despite rapidly rising numbers of new COVID-19 infections, the City of Tulsa’s mitigation working group is not moving toward reimplementing a mask mandate.
City Councilor Kara Joy McKee said there have been calls for that from the community. Right now, the city is going to focus on messaging and other actions that support the Tulsa Health Department’s work to to increase vaccination rates. Currently, 53% of county residents are fully vaccinated.
There was some real concern from some members of the working group that though masks work and we want everyone to properly wear them in crowds and indoors, as [THD Executive Director Dr. Bruce] Dart told us last week, we need increased vaccinations to get that big help that s essential to getting a grip on the Delta variant that is, frankly, whupping our butts, right? McKee said. ....

Amazon will build a sortation facility, shown in a rendering, at Mingo Road and 36th Street North.
Amazon is building another large-scale facility in Tulsa.
The company chose a 40-acre site at Mingo Road and 36th Street North for a 270,000-square foot sortation facility, the point between fulfillment centers and Amazon’s last-mile delivery stations.
Mayor G.T. Bynum said the sortation center is a $32 million project, Amazon’s third large investment in Tulsa.
We’ve gone in a five-year period of time from being a city with no Amazon presence other than the boxes that arrived at people’s homes to being a city where Amazon was our largest new employer in the history of the city when they came to town and they’ve built two other facilities. Or, at least they’ve built one other, and then the other is now going to be under construction, Bynum said. ....

City Councilors Still Hatching A Plan For Backyard Chicken Regulation Changes

Tulsa city councilors are still mulling over updates to regulations on backyard chickens.
In their latest round of proposed changes discussed last week, the minimum distance for a chicken coop to be from a residence is cut from 40 feet to 35. A significant portion of the city is zoned residential with lots a minimum of 60 feet wide.
District 4 Councilor Kara Joy McKee said fresh eggs can make a big difference in some Tulsans’ diets.
And if we’re at 35 feet, that eliminates a lot of people from being allowed to have chickens, but a 25-foot limit, I think, could really it’ll be safe, it’ll be clean and it will be inclusive, McKee said. ....

THD Says City Of Tulsa Mask Mandate Can Expire April 30 As Planned

An audio version of this story
The Tulsa Health Department recommended Friday the City of Tulsa can let its mask ordinance expire April 30, given current COVID trends.
THD Executive Director Dr. Bruce Dart said new cases and hospitalizations are at levels last seen in June, and more and more people get vaccinated every day.
We’ll continue to scan the environment, watch the data and make the best recommendations to keep people safe. If that means recommending that we reinstitute our mask mandate, we would do that, Dart said.
Dart said wearing a mask in public is still recommended until upwards of 70% of the county has been vaccinated. But pandemic fatigue seems to be an issue. District Three Councilor Crista Patrick said this week businesses she visits don’t seem worried about requiring masks like they’re supposed to. ....
