HARTFORD, Conn. — Community members and journalists, along with Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Mayor Luke Bronin, gathered Saturday afternoon in Hartford for a rally opposing the sale of the Courant and Tribune Publishing to Alden Global Capital, a hedge fund with a reputation for cutting costs.
The “Save Local News” rally came less than a week before shareholders vote on May 21 on a deal to sell Tribune Publishing to Alden for $633 million. A rival group, led by Maryland hotel magnate Stewart Bainum, is attempting to assemble a competing bid for the papers that make up Tribune publishing. Bainum would sell at least some of Tribune’s papers, including the Courant, to local owners. ....

Stafford driver arrested in deadly I-84 crash in East Hartford

Stafford was arrested Thursday on charges that include second-degree manslaughter; second-degree assault; first-degree reckless endangerment and driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, they said.
The crash happened about
Sept. 3 on
I-84 west, state police said. Santiago drove a 2020 Jeep Compass into the back of Miguel Angel Berrios’ 2007 Honda VT600 motorcycle, throwing Berrios, of
Willimantic, and his passenger, Miltia Mercado of
New Britain. Both were seriously injured; Mercado later died, police said.
Santiago’s other charges are second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle; second-degree assault with a motor vehicle; reckless driving; following too closely and failure to use a seatbelt, state police said. ....
