I have faith: A secular response to tragedy God won’t help us, but faith can. Not faith in any higher power, but faith in ourselves, in the collective power of humanity to effect change for the better. In this Nov. 24, 2020, file photo, Kyla Harris, 10, writes a tribute to her grandmother Patsy Gilreath Moore, who died at age 79 of COVID-19, at a symbolic cemetery created to remember and honor lives lost to COVID-19 in the Liberty City neighborhood of Miami. (AP Photo/Lynne Sladky) May 7, 2021 (RNS) How do you heal the brokenness of your life after a loved one dies, after a hurricane strikes, after gunshots shatter your life, after the devastation of a global pandemic? In religious societies such as the United States, one common bulwark has been to hold fast to a belief in a loving God. ....
Cancer was already bubbling in his throat when Christopher Hitchens was composing his memoir Hitch-22. He did not know the last curtain was coming down, and would not receive the fateful diagnosis until the book’s launch in the summer of 2010. Scourge of presidents. Furiously independent, forever searching for the Good Fight. It was intended to be a mythology – a story more than half in love with itself. Now, almost a decade since his death in late 2011, it is worth interrogating what remains of that self-made legacy and the judgements of devotees and enemies alike: how and why Hitchens famously abandoned the socialism that nurtured him, what became of the New Atheist movement he helped to guide, and above all, just how deeply Iraq sullied and sank his reputation. ....

on 4/5/21 at 3:06 pm to indianswim There is little practical application to whining about criminal double standards; the Left could care less, and the (informed) Right knows that it s either an all-in for violent revolt or acquiescence to a radical form of fundamental change . And that Radical Form can be identified as having roots in Critical Theory. The New Revolution with Steve Hilton had this on his Sunday night show, and it was very elucidating. Back over 100 years to the roots of said Critical Theory. One of the characteristics/principles of said Theory, is that the Left gets a criminal pass (think Hillary, Comey, Hunter, et al).while the Right gets zero tolerance or even prosecution on fraudulent charges (M. Flynn, Trump Associates, et al). ....
