The Gila County Board of Supervisors approved a Conditional Use Permit application for Michael and Dina Walling at its May 4 meeting. The CUP allows the Wallings to build a three-story, 39-foot tall single-family residence in the Hunter Creek Ranch subdivision northeast of Payson. There were only three neighboring property owners who attended the required community meeting on the issue, according to Randy Pluimer, acting director of the countyâs Community Development Department. He said none objected to the Wallingsâ plans. He added there have been no other comments submitted on the project. The Planning and Zoning Commission held a public hearing on March 18. The commissioners voted 7 to 0 to recommend to the Board of Supervisors approval of the CUP application, with one commissioner absent. ....
At its May 4 meeting the Gila County Board of Supervisors gladly approved an amendment to its intergovernmental agreement with the Arizona Department of Health Services to increase the stateâs grant award by $300,762 for immunization services to enhance COVID-19 activities and vaccination efforts. With this latest infusion of money to fight COVID-19, the Gila County Health and Emergency Management Department has received $5.4 million from the ADHS and Centers for Disease Control, said Michael OâDriscoll, director of the health department. The funds must be used to provide vaccines, contact tracing and surveillance, he said. OâDriscoll told the supervisors his department is having difficulty in finding people to fill the extra positions the grant awards have made possible. âWe are looking into seeing if we can contract out some of these jobs,â he said. ....
The Gila County Board of Supervisors on May 4 accepted the resignations of its entire Fair and Racing Commission. The BOS also presented each of the commissioners with special recognition for their service â some members have served the county for 30 to 40 years. While no specific reason for the groupâs resignation was presented at the May 4 meeting, speaking on behalf of the outgoing members, William Byrne, Fair and Racing Commission chair, said it was time for new blood to take the reins and help the use of the facility expand. Resigning were Byrne, Christi Lavin, Melva Enders, Janet Cline, Floyd Livingood and Andy Hetrick. ....
With school coming to a close, if you are 16 or older and want a summer job, take a chance to intern with Gila Countyâs IT department for eight weeks; for the Town of Payson; or work in other communities around Rim Country. Two years ago Tyler Shreeve scored a summer internship with Gila Countyâs IT department and, among other experiences, created a two-minute video about the summer jobs program, which you can view at youtube/XDd D0FJObs or just search youtube using keywords âGila County Summer Youth Employmentâ to find the link. These jobs usually end in July, but Tylerâs work continued into the fall and winter, too â showing that Gila Countyâs summer youth jobs program is an exceptional way to make career connections and explore different lines of work. In previous years other students have interned with the city of Globeâs economic development department, with the Town of Payson, and other Rim Country communities. Taking precautio ....
With the use of recreational marijuana now legal, the Gila County Board of Supervisors is taking a hard look at what they can do to regulate its sale in the unincorporated areas of the county. At an April 27 work session, the countyâs Community Development Department brought the board information about adult use (recreational) marijuana and the associated Arizona Revised Statutes from the perspective of zoning regulation. Gila County currently has two licenses for dispensing marijuana â one in Globe, which is for recreational use purchases, and one in Payson, which is both a medical marijuana provider and has a license for recreational use sales. The Payson facility is currently closed, but slated to open again. ....
