Connecticut is losing bank branches at a faster rate than the rest of the country.
And while customers are using online and mobile apps more and more to do their banking business, at least one industry analyst doesn’t see physical locations disappearing entirely.
Over the last decade, the number of bank branches in the state has dropped by 201 locations, for an overall closure rate of 16 percent, according to John Carusone, president of the Bank Analysis Center, a Hartford-based industry consulting firm. The national closure rate over the same period was 6 percent, Carusone said. ....

For some municipal leaders, the state legislature’s 2015 promise to send hundreds of millions of dollars in sales tax revenue to cities and towns is one of the worst examples of fiscal bait-and-switch in Connecticut politics.
And for the Democratic state legislators who won re-election after making that pledge the promise is something they’d like to forget.
That’s because the Municipal Revenue Sharing Account, the mechanism through which municipalities would receive a portion of the state sales tax, also become a recurring pain in the legislature’s side. ....

Nonprofit Pivots to help Struggling Connecticut Families

Graver said in one afternoon, she lost 80 percent of her business.
And then a friend told her about the Women & Family Life Center in Guilford, which was also facing making some big changes.
Executive Director Meghan Scanlon said, we, obviously had to pivot during the pandemic, and recognized that a lot of the women coming into the center for all kinds of resources were struggling financially.
The girls empowerment program, for which they were awarded the $10,000 grant had to be suspended for social distancing.
Social Worker Emilie Steinnagel says the cash they re giving families, is just the beginning.
We re not just giving $500 and people are walking away. We re giving $500 and we re hearing what s going on in their life, and then helping them connect to other kinds of resources that they didn t know that they were able to access, said Steinnagel. ....

GUILFORD It all started when foster kid Noah Ehlert got his very first bike at age 13.
Decades later, through sunshine and freezing temperatures, rain, hail and dust storms, Ehlert rode his bicycle from California to Florida with one thing on his mind: Children living in foster care.
The Guilford resident’s 3,100-mile bike trek, across the lower 48, in early 2020, was four years in the planning. He documented it in his two-hour film, “Discover Your Path Tour, A Journey To Inspire.”
The two-hour film includes drone shots, heart-to-heart conversations with participants in the foster care system, as well as those that work with the children, and conversations with Ehlert. Film proceeds will go towards creating a transitional living program for youth aging out of the foster care system called the Discover Your Path House, planned for Guilford. ....
