My last gig: Pianist, composer and band leader Irving Flores: 'Without music, I think I would not exist'

Pianist and band leader Irving Flores, 54, is a mainstay of the San Diego and Tijuana jazz and Latin-music scenes. He is now producing and arranging an album of jazzy Christmas music for trombonist and singer Dave Scott. It is due out later this year. irvingflores.com
My last gig as a headliner was March 1, 2020, at Dizzy’s with the Irving Flores Afro-Cuban Quartet, which features Fernando Gomez on drums, Dean Hulett on bass and Amilkar Peña on congas. It was a beautiful concert, full of jazz, Latin flavor, great improvisations and the nice feedback of the audience. There were no face masks. People were still shaking hands, and friends gave us hugs. ....

Music, radio broadcasting and cultural heritage are key inspirations for KSDS Jazz 88 mainstay Ron Dhanifu

Print
Veteran KSDS-FM Jazz 88 DJ Ron Dhanifu was attending elementary school in Los Angeles when he became captivated by music and radio. His enduring passion for both and the opportunity they provide to share an endlessly rich cultural heritage have been constants throughout his life as an award-winning broadcaster and tireless champion of jazz, blues and other genres.
Dhanifu was 31 when he relocated to San Diego in 1977 and began a decade-long stint as KSDS’s operations manager and one of the station’s most knowledgeable and affable hosts. After moving back to L.A., where he was on the air and helped launch a record company, he returned to San Diego in 1991 to San Diego and KSDS. He has never left. ....

A.J. Croce's healing new album of classics, 'By Request,' follows death of his wife: 'She was my best friend'

A.J. Croce has experienced the transformative power of music for much of his life, be it as a vehicle for celebration and contemplation, transcendent love and profound loss, and many points in between.
With his 10th and newest album, the cathartic “By Request,” music provides a life-affirming way for him to grieve losing his wife of 24 years, Marlo, who died suddenly in 2018 from a rare and sudden heart virus.
But Croce does not achieve that catharsis with his own songs. Instead, he turns to funk, rock, blues, soul, pop and country favorites by a dozen distinctly different artists, including Neil Young (“Only Love Can Break Your Heart”); Sam Cooke (“Nothing Can Change This Love”); the Five Stairsteps, (“O-o-h Child”); Randy Newman (“Have You Seen My Baby?”); and the Beach Boys (“Sail On Sailor”). ....

Arts & Culture Newsletter: For musician Michael Tiernan, the show must go on

I’m
David L. Coddon,
and here’s your guide to all things essential in San Diego’s arts and culture this week.
Singer-songwriter
Michael Tiernan modestly calls it “one of the lesser known, longest-running showcases in San Diego.” Fans of this local musician, however, have known about Tiernan’s
“Acoustic Wednesdays” showcase since he began hosting it “many moons ago, back in 2006 or 2007” at En Fuego Cantina & Grill in Del Mar.
Every Wednesday, Tiernan would preside over an evening of music, performing and presenting other area artists to audiences.

“It became kind of my office,” Tiernan recalled. “My listeners always knew I was there.” ....

Can North Park's Queen Bee's Art & Cultural Center be saved?

Print
Can Queen Bee’s Art & Cultural Center in North Park regain its buzz as a lively hive for music, poetry, dance, spoken-word and comedy events?
Or has the 13-year-old grassroots community center shuttered since March because of the coronavirus pandemic and struggling to stay afloat shut its doors forever?
Those questions are growing more pressing by the day for Alma Rodriguez, who founded Queen Bee’s as a labor of love, and for the many seasoned and aspiring San Diego artists who have found an inviting home there.
In February, some of those artists including poet Rudy Francisco, comedian Walter Ford and jazz artists Charlie Arbelaez and Gilbert Castellanos will perform a series of livestream benefit shows to help Rodriguez raise the $40,000 she needs to help the venue ride out the pandemic until at least summer. A GoFundMe crowdsourcing campaign was launched this week and, by late Friday afternoon, had raised $2,070. ....
