DTE's 'gold sponsor' sign at Shirkey fundraiser stirs up controversy

DTE Energy says it did not donate to a fundraiser for Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey, held one day after video revealed the highest ranking Republican in the state believes aspects of the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol are a hoax and staged.
The fundraiser, held Wednesday at a venue near the state Capitol, was for the Clarklake Republican s PAC. A sign at the fundraiser listed DTE as one of several gold sponsors for the event. A Michigan Senate Republicans website indicates a business needs to donate $5,000 or more to be a gold sponsor.
But DTE spokesman Pete Ternes said the company stopped all political donations in January. Asked why the sign at Shirkey s event would include DTE, Ternes said, we also heard about the sign through Twitter. ....

Sen. Shirkey gets eviscerated for calling insurrection a 'hoax,' but still says Trump not responsible

“This is just crazy,” Tapper tweeted.
In a video posted on Twitter, Progress Michigan Deputy Director Sam Inglot caught up with Shirkey outside of a fundraiser Wednesday morning and asked the Senate’s top Republican if he planned “to heed some of the calls” to resign.
“No, I don’t have any plans for that,” Shirkey said.
When Inglot asked whether he still believed the insurrection was a hoax, Shirkey admitted, “The event was very real and very unfortunate,” but insisted Trump was not responsible for the attack.
Then, without a face covering, he walked into a building where a sign read, No mask, no entry, it s the law. ....

The party called for the Clarklake Republican to step down after he was seen in a video calling the violent Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. a “hoax” in a meeting with Hillsdale County Republican Party leaders.
“We have one message for @SenMikeShirkey, who amplified and repeated lies to undermine our democracy, openly met with militia groups and gave them messaging advice: Resign,” wrote the Michigan Democratic Party on Twitter. “His rhetoric and actions are not worthy of the office he holds.” ....
