Overturned tractor-trailer ties up traffic in Luzerne County

LAUREL RUN, Pa. A tractor-trailer crash tied up traffic in part of Luzerne County.
State police say a big rig overturned along East Northampton Street in Laurel Run around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, in the area of Giant s Despair.
Troopers have not said if the driver was injured.
So far, there is no word on what led to the tractor-trailer crash in Luzerne County. ....

McDonald's in Edwardsville being renovated


McDonald’s Playland in Edwardsville is being demolished as part of a plan to remodel the fast-food restaurant.
The restaurant’s exterior also is being upgraded and a double drive-thru is being added, Edwardsville Borough manager Cathy Soprano said.
It is the latest McDonald’s owned by Pat Stella to undergo renovations. McDonald’s restaurants on Kidder Street and East Northampton Street in Wilkes-Barre and Route 315 in Pittston Twp. were previously renovated.
McDonald’s restaurant and Playland at 900 Wilkes-Barre Twp. Blvd. in Wilkes-Barre Twp., which is owned by Scott Kavlick, were torn down last year and a new restaurant with a double drive-thru and updated design replaced it. ....

Wilkes-Barre council promotes assistant clerk despite salary objections


The Wilkes-Barre City Council on Thursday voted 4-0 to promote assistant clerk Cathy Payne to city clerk when Jim Ryan retires from the position April 2.
Payne will be paid an annual salary of $77,000. The union representing city hall workers will post the assistant clerk position at a salary of $45,000.
City resident and towing company operator Bob Kadluboski objected to Payne receiving “a $20,000 raise,” calling it “another slap in the face to city taxpayers.” He asked what her qualifications were and why the opening wasn’t advertised.
Jason Carr, who owns rental properties in the city, said the clerk post warrants a salary of no more than $50,000, and he claimed that of the 14 largest cities in Pennsylvania, only Philadelphia and Pittsburgh employ assistant clerks. He also said a council member told him Payne would retire by the end of the year. ....
