Other than the score, one stat more than any others has been reflective of the New Mexico men’s basketball team’s success or failures this year: Points in the paint.
The Lobos (5-8 overall, 1-8 Mountain West) are 5-0 when scoring 40 or more points in the paint and 0-8 when scoring fewer in the paint.
They’ve also had the edge in points in the paint over their opponent in all five wins and lost or tied that category in all eight losses. In both Nevada losses, the Lobos tied in points in the paint scoring, but lost one game with a historically bad free throw shooting performance and the other after allowing nine second-half 3-point ....

Grammer: Lobos' next temporary home will be in Utah

• It will spend the next two weeks based out of St. George, Utah.
• It will add a rare January non-conference game there Wednesday against the Dixie State University Trailblazers, a first-year Division I member of the WAC which, ironically, had its WAC-opening series this past weekend against New Mexico State University postponed due to a positive COVID-19 case on the Aggies roster.
• It will make the 2-hour bus ride from St. George to Las Vegas, Nev., this weekend, where the Lobos are scheduled to play UNLV on Saturday and Monday, before returning to Utah.
• In lieu of payment for traveling to play at DSU’s Burns Arena, per a contract reviewed by the Journal, the Lobos get to practice at DSU and “host” their Jan. 21 and 23 Mountain West Conference games against San Jose State. The Spartans, coincidentally, are staying at the same Phoenix-based hotel as NMSU because a county health order forced their relocation out of state. ....

Here are some extra notes, quotes, tweets, stats, videos or whatever else I could empty out of the old notebook after Friday’s 82-46 Lobos loss to Utah State in the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Texas:
What’s (or who’s) the point?
Basketball teams need a point guard.
The Lobos certainly do. But, even after addressing the position heavily in recruiting, we’re eight games in, and the Lobos are still trying to figure out what they have at that position. ....
