Muscle soreness and achy joints are common symptoms among COVID-19 patients. But for some people, symptoms are more severe, long-lasting, and even bizarre, including rheumatoid arthritis flares, autoimmune myositis, or COVID toes.
A new Northwestern Medicine study has, for the first time, confirmed and illustrated the causes of these symptoms through radiological imaging.
We ve realized that the COVID virus can trigger the body to attack itself in different ways, which may lead to rheumatological issues that require lifelong management, said corresponding author Dr. Swati Deshmukh.
The paper will be published on Feb. 17 in the journal ....

Researchers at the University of Sydney have launched The QUality of life Evaluation STudy (The QUEST Initiative), a wide-ranging, longitudinal study for medicinal cannabis patients.
The QUEST Initiative aims to be one of the world’s largest studies examining quality of life outcomes in patients prescribed medicinal cannabis. The study aims to recruit at least 2,100 patients – the minimum sample size (number of recruited patients) calculated to achieve statistical relevance – by June 2021 with potential to extend this study internationally. ....

Another Drug Shows Mortality Benefit for Severe COVID-19

Tocilizumab (Actemra) showed a slight but statistically significant mortality benefit in critically ill COVID-19 patients, according to a press release from the U.K. s pragmatic RECOVERY trial.
Of patients treated with tocilizumab, an IL-6 inhibitor used for rheumatoid arthritis and related conditions, 29% died within 28 days versus 33% of patients treated with usual care (rate ratio 0.86, 95% CI 0.77-0.96,
P 0.007), researchers stated. This amounted to a number needed to treat of 25 to save one additional life.
And tocilizumab improved the probability of discharge alive after 28 days, from 47% to 54% (RR 1.23, 95% CI 1.12-1.34,
