Killeen ISD announces 2021 Teachers of the Year

Both are 2021 Teachers of the Year in the Killeen Independent School District.
The Elementary Teacher of the Year is James Cook, a fifth-grade teacher at Cedar Valley Elementary School. The Secondary Teacher of the Year winner is Tracy King, a special education teacher at Manor Middle School.
In a livestreamed event on KISD-TV Tuesday, two groups of district representatives surprised the elementary and secondary teacher of the year in back-to-back presentations at the teachersâ homes.
Responding to the award, both teachers expressed humble gratitude, pointing out that this year above any other, all teachers have labored tirelessly to re-learn how to teach in multiple formats and meet the unique needs of students and parents during the uncertainties of COVID-19. ....

KISD seniors set to earn 500 industry level certifications

Honoring a special group of soon-to-graduate seniors, Killeen ISDâs Career and Technical Education leaders distributed hundreds of purple cords in recognition of achievement above and beyond the expected.
The Killeen ISD Career Center expected about 325 seniors to participate in the celebration recently at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center.
In all, about 368 seniors are set to earn more than 500 industry level certifications this year in a wide array of career-focused programs.
While the large majority of the honored students attend the Career Center, some completed their work on other high school campuses.
âThe most precious part of this to me,â said Chief College, Career, Military Readiness Officer Nancy Patterson, âis that they have all met high school requirements to graduate and these have stepped beyond.â ....

KISD board to review virtual learning plans Tuesday

Killeen Independent School District Superintendent John Craft will provide the school board with an update on virtual learning plans for the 2021-2022 school year during the upcoming board workshop Tuesday.
Amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, hundreds of parents have informed Killeen ISD that they prefer to keep their children enrolled in a virtual learning setting.
The district has received 855 requests for a virtual learning option for the 2021-2022 school year, according to the school board workshop agenda. Parents submitted their requests for virtual learning to the district from March 3 to March 26.
âAs we prepare for the 2021-2022 school year, we have been collecting enrollment data that will be presented to include instructional modality preferences,â the agenda states. âThis will be an opportunity to discuss future plans regarding in-person and virtual learning opportunities for students.â ....

KISD hourly employees ask school board for raise

Seven Killeen Independent School District employees urged the school board Tuesday to consider a pay raise for hourly employees, some detailing second and third jobs they have had to take on to make ends meet.
During the public forum portion of the meeting, Killeen Educators Association members, and KISD employees, shared their proposal for the districtâs thousands of employees: a 4% raise for teachers, nurses, counselors, and librarians; and a raise of $3 per hour for support personnel, hourly employees such as aides, secretaries, custodians, bus monitors, bus drivers and cafeteria workers.
Jason Wylie, of the Texas State Teachers Association, pointed out that the district has an employee turnover rate higher than the state average. ....

KILLEEN, TX â The Killeen ISD Board of Trustees voted to unanimously approve a compensation package.
The package will provide equity adjustments between 8-13% for some hourly employees and an additional 3.5% general pay increase for all employees beginning July 1, 2021.
Killeen ISD s Superintendent, Dr. John Craft, presented the compensation package at Tuesday nightâs Board meeting.
The salary for a first-year teacher with Killeen ISD will be $52,000 for the 2021-2022 school year.
In addition to the 3.5% general pay increase, some hourly non-exempt staff will receive pay rate equity adjustments to align with market values according to a Texas Association of School Board (TASB)-HR department study. ....
