Ecuador's pro-mining politics dealt a blow by Indigenous, green movement

Ecuadorians voted for their next president on Sunday 7 February, but it wasn’t the only significant decision on ballots. 
Cuenca, the third largest city in the South American country, voted to ban mining projects within the nearby drainage basins of five rivers. There are over 4,000 large and small bodies of water in the sensitive Páramo ecosystem, which acts as a reservoir in the Andes. The land, which is directly adjacent to a national park, has been declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. 
Nevertheless, corporations from Canada, Australia, Peru and Chile had already been granted 43 concessions for the mining of various metals. Fourteen grassroots organisations were behind the referendum, approved by the constitutional court last September via the Cuenca city council.  ....

On February 7, 2021, over 13 million Ecuadorian voters across the country’s 24 provinces will cast their ballots for president and vice president, the 137-seat National Assembly, provincial legislatures in all 24 provinces, and members of the Andean Parliament the governing and deliberative body of the Andean community, which encompasses Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. Whomever wins the upcoming elections will have to address the country’s main problems, which, according to public opinion polls, Ecuadorians perceive to be an economic crisis, poverty, and debt; unemployment and underemployment; corruption and justice; the Covid-19 pandemic; insecurity and violence; and education.

Ecuador’s National Assembly dismissed government minister María Paula Romo from her position on November 24, over her actions during last year’s anti-government protests.

Romo allowed the use of expired tear gas canisters against protesters and authorised the police violence inside the humanitarian aid centres set up at universities where activists were staying.
Data from the Ecuadorian Ombudsman s Office revealed that police had used excessive force at the protests. At least 11 people were killed, 1340 injured and more than 1000 were detained.
Romo’s impeachment followed demonstrations organised by the Federation of University Students of Ecuador (FEUE) outside the National Assembly. ....

Ecuador: Government tries to ban left from election

The establishment are trying every trick to exclude leading opposition ticket Union for Hope (UNES) from the presidential election.
Ecuador’s Electoral Disputes Tribunal (TCE) denied the UNES ticket final certification on November 29. The TCE ordered the National Electoral Council (CNE) to review charges against UNES presidential candidate Andrés Arauz and vice-presidential candidate Carlos Rabascall and possibly exclude them from the election.
