The Edmonds Citizens’ Housing Commission recently issued its much anticipated recommendations focused on expanding housing options in Edmonds.
Adoption of the Citizens’ Housing Commission’s recommendations by Edmonds would permit construction of either a duplex or two townhouses in most single family residential neighborhoods. In addition, two, three or four housing units on single family residential parcels, or cluster housing/cottage development would be permitted in other single family residential areas.
In addition, development of Detached Accessory Dwelling Units (DADU) would be permitted in most single family residential areas.
The Revised Code Of Washington defines a DADU as ....

Develop, for Council consideration, diverse housing policy options designed to expand the range of housing (including rental and owned) available in Edmonds irrespective of age, gender, race, religious affiliation, physical disability, or sexual orientation.”
For 18 months, two dozen Edmonds residents, selected by city council, listened to the public, researched housing issues, investigated future needs and worked as a team, with public input, to create those “options.”
The housing commission sought more public input than any other Edmonds commission:
Four open houses – one in person, three online (COVID curtailed our ability to meet in person) ....

As the Edmonds Citizens Housing Commission concludes this Thursday, the Alliance of Citizens for Edmonds (ACE) thanks the Commissioners and alternate Commissioners, for volunteering their time, committing to this aspirational process. Understandably, the process was made more difficult for all involved due to Covid-19 restrictions, mandating virtual meetings and eliminating the original promise of neighborhood meetings throughout all of Edmonds.
The Commission did, however, offer one in-person Open House and survey before Covid restrictions, followed by 3 more surveys combined with 3 prerecorded virtual Open House viewing options and one Zoom Webinar. ACE followed with optimism and high hopes this 16-month process. However, we are concerned that input the Commission received at each public engagement touchpoint, in the form of hundreds of questions, comments, emails and feedback from local folks, was disreg ....
