Yancey Learning Center receives approval from NC State Bar Board of Paralegal Certification for program


BURNSVILLE — The Yancey Learning Center of Mayland Community College is proud to announce the launch of a new Paralegal Certificate Program recently approved by The North Carolina State Bar Board of Paralegal Certification.
This new program prepares students who already possess an associate degree or a bachelor s degree for a career as a Paralegal. Students can complete the Paralegal Certificate Program and begin their legal career in just 12 months and North Carolina residents may take this class for FREE through the Governor’s Emergency Educational Relief (GEER) fund.
The paralegal field is one of the few employment growth fields in the United States. Law firms and corporate legal departments are relying more heavily on paralegals as cost-saving measures to performs tasks once routinely handled by attorneys. The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, forecasts a faster-than-average growth rate of 10 percent through 2029. ....

Latest COVID developments 'staggering,' Cohen says


New COVID-19 cases continued to break records locally and across the state last week with Pitt County Schools seeing its highest number of school-affected cases yet and the county recording its 59th death on Friday.
The state court system also will halt all non-essential in-person proceedings for 30 days starting Monday, Chief Justice Cheri Beasley announced as 7,540 new COVID-19 cases were reported across the state.
Friday’s total surpassed the previous one-day high of 6,495 cases recorded just two days earlier on Wednesday, a development state Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Mandy Cohen called “staggering and alarming.”
“We are now seeing the impact of Thanksgiving gatherings,” Cohen said. “Do not wait until it is you or your loved one sick or alone in the hospital or you are facing the loss of a loved one to wear a mask, wait 6 feet apart, and wash your hands often.
