'Housing crisis' in Hendersonville; Officials talk possible solutions

Hendersonville, like many other localities across the country, is facing a crisis in affordable and workforce housing availability.
City officials believe it s a supply and demand issue due to a lack of land to build on, zoning restrictions and high construction costs.
“I think you’re seeing people fleeing parts of the country where climate change has had a dramatic affect, City Manager John Connet said. People are moving from the West Coast, Arizona, New Mexico and those kind of places because of the drought and wildfires.”

Déjà vu: Affordable housing study tells officials what most already know, so now what?

A study by UNC Greensboro, commissioned by the City of Wilmington and New Hanover County.
The findings of a recent housing study are surprising to few: the city of Wilmington and New Hanover County are verging on a housing affordability crisis. But advocates say the report may act as a catalyst for new housing policies in the region.
The study set the stakes quite high: more than half of New Hanover’s renters are cost-burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing, and little housing is available that’s affordable for low-wage earners.
Katrina Knight, Executive Director of Good Shepherd Center, has been talking about a crisis in affordable housing since she came to Wilmington in 2004. She advocated for the study as a member of the ad hoc committee on housing several years ago. ....

Wilmington and New Hanover County have finally released their comprehensive housing study for our area. Some of the main findings: The region’s population growth is driving the housing shortage and that a majority in our community worry about the cost of housing.
Researchers from the University of North Carolina Greensboro and Bowen National Research presented their housing studies to both county commissioners and city council members this week.
Stephen Sills, professor and director of UNCG’s Center for Housing and Community Studies, is one of the authors. He finds disparities between income levels when it comes to satisfaction with housing availability. ....
