Hendersonville, like many other localities across the country, is facing a crisis in affordable and workforce housing availability. City officials believe it's a supply and demand issue due to a lack of land to build on, zoning restrictions and high construction costs. “I think you’re seeing people fleeing parts of the country where climate change has had a dramatic affect," City Manager John Connet said. "People are moving from the West Coast, Arizona, New Mexico and those kind of places because of the drought and wildfires.” Despite a developer's best intentions to set rent costs lower, that doesn't always happen, Mayor Pro Tempore Jerry Smith said.
