China s energy conglomerate Shenhua Energy Co s recent statement about its withdrawal from a project in Australia s New South Wales is another unfair treatment by Australia to discriminate Chinese businesses, experts said.

NSW Gov pays Shenhua $100M to withdraw from mine; Traditional Owners call for land hand-back

Traditional Owners in northern NSW have cautiously welcomed a landmark $100 million deal which halts the controversial Shenhua Watermark Coal project on the Liverpool Plains.
But Gomeroi Traditional Owner Steve Talbot said the parcel of 6000 hectares of high-biodiversity land should be handed back to the local Aboriginal community.
“I’m glad that Shenhua got packing and sent back to China,” Mr Talbot told NITV.
“I’m happy for the farmers. I’m glad that the mine is not going to go ahead, but it still doesn’t protect sites that are still out there from any future mining that might happen down the track.” ....

Reclaiming the future

Reclaiming the future
Climate change
Climate change has highlighted the duty of current generations to those who come after us. Philipa Duthie explores some of the lessons we can learn from indigenous cultures and new moves to deliver intergenerational justice.
Australia recently witnessed a watershed moment in the campaign for intergenerational justice. Eight teenagers led a landmark class action seeking an injunction against the expansion of a coalmine in Gunnedah, New South Wales, Australia. They argued it would “endanger their future” by contributing to ecological breakdown and that Australia’s Federal Environment Minister had a duty of care to protect young people against future environmental risks. The teenagers are among a growing number of young people using litigation to force action on the climate crisis. ....
