Local bike trails recognized as some of Minnesota's best | News


Minnesotans are known for their appreciation of the outdoors and a popular way to immerse oneself in nature is by utilizing one of the many trail systems throughout the state. From mountain biking to snowmobiling to hiking and much more, northeast Minn. is home to many of these trails. 
The Mesabi Trail winds through 28 communities over almost 130 miles of paved paths. The trail begins at the Mississippi River in Grand Rapids and travels all the way to the Boundary Waters in Ely. Travelers are able to enjoy views of lakes, ponds, creeks, open iron ore mine pits and forests. Construction began in 1996 and the trail will be fully built in the next five years to include 155 miles and become one of the longest paved trails in the country. St. Francis Music Center presents outdoor concert
LITTLE FALLS After a year of canceling concerts and recitals, the St. Francis Music Center is presenting an outdoor spring concert on the grounds of Linden Hill Historic Estate in Little Falls. This free, outdoor concert is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. May 19. In case of rain, the concert will be moved to May 26.
This concert will feature several ensembles from the Music Center. St. Francis Preparatory Orchestra, under the direction of Melissa Von Itter, will perform familiar tunes. The St. Francis Concert Orchestra, directed by Olivia Munson, will play “Linus and Lucy,” “Alexander’s Rag Time Band” and two other pieces. ....

Gull Lake Sailing School Co-President Mary Jetland announced recently the school was selected to host the 2022 MC Masters Nationals, the first time it was chosen to host the prestigious event for sailors ages 50 and older. ....

Learn to camp, paddle and mountain bike in Minnesota’s great outdoors
After a year-long hiatus, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is pleased to resume its award-winning program series to help beginners of all ages learn new outdoor skills in a Minnesota state park or recreation area.
The programs, which have been revamped in accordance with COVID-19 safety protocols, will restart on the first weekend in June and continue throughout the summer. Registration for the programs begins Monday, May 3.
The program offerings include the following:
I Can Camp! – This program provides hands-on instruction on setting up camp, starting a campfire, camp cooking and fun activities to do at Minnesota state parks. All gear is provided, including the tent, air mattresses, cooking gear and other basic camping equipment. One-night, two-night and backpacking programs are available, as well as mini two-hour sessions. ....
