Meeting scheduled to discuss natural disasters Patrick Stout, Voice Correspondent MACOMB The McDonough County Emergency Services and Disaster Assistance Agency has scheduled a multi-hazards mitigation planning committee meeting for Wednesday, May 19 at 2 p.m. in the ESDA operations center at 740 West University Drive on the campus of Western Illinois University. ESDA Director Edgar Rodriguez said this week that this will be the second time the committee has come together to voice opinions on the mitigation of natural hazards. The frequency and damages caused by severe storms and other natural hazards in the county will be discussed, Rodriguez said. Zachary Krug of the American Environmental Corporation in Springfield is serving as the committee consultant. ....

Watts discusses policing, community relationships Tabi Jozwick, Voice Correspondent MACOMB Western Illinois University’s Office of Public Safety interim director Derick Watts took the time to answer questions during Monday’s Zoom interview with WIU and Macomb community members. According to the WIU March 14, 2019 press release, Watts, a lieutenant with OPS, was appointed as interim director after Scott Harris retired on March 15, 2019. Watts took over OPS as interim director on March 16, 2019. Watts started the interview by saying law enforcement officers adapt to change with laws being updated. One change he mentioned was at the beginning of his career, domestic violence victims were hesitant to press charges against their abusers because of fear. He said the law was later changed so police officers had the right to press charges without the victim making that decision, turning Illinois into a forerunner into that aspect. ....
Helen Spencer, Voice Correspondent MACOMB The WIU Macomb Town Hall met via Zoom on Monday to field questions and discuss concerns with Western Illinois University (WIU). Dr Guiyou Huang, president of WIU discussed his priorities to take WIU to a higher level of excellence. He stated that WIU will be recruiting aggressively, starting for Fall 2021. Having a recruiting plan for the next six years and developing plans for student retention were also discussed as ways to reach the goal of students and parents wanting to come to WIU. Huang also wants people of color and those with disabilities to feel confident about being on campus. This not only includes students, but faculty and staff as well. He touched on the idea of having a partnership with a university abroad. He stated that more work needs to be done in recruiting international students and in study abroad programs for students and faculty as well.
