So she founded Women’s Voices Raised for Social Justice, an organization that now includes more than 500 members, and works toward meaningful change on a slew of the issues that dominate the headlines. Twenty-five years ago,
Reginald Dwayne Betts saw his entire life trajectory change in the space of 30 minutes. In what he has since described as “a moment of insanity,” Betts, then a 16-year-old high school junior, carjacked a man. He would serve eight years in prison for the crime.
“Somewhere between pulling out a pistol that fit nicely in the palm of my hand, tapping lightly on the window of a forest green Grand Prix and waking the sleeping middle-aged white man with the muzzle of the burner, I committed six felonies,” Betts writes in his 2009 memoir, “A Question of Freedom.” ....

ST. LOUIS The St. Louis Fire Department is joining the effort to fight gun violence by handing out free gun locks at fire departments and in some neighborhoods. After a 4-year-old girl was shot this weekend, the department wants to prevent future incidents.
“We are known for running into the fire,” Chief Dennis Jenkerson said. “We can t continue to see these children injured by senseless shootings.”
The “Lock It For Love” campaign was started by Women’s Voices Raised for Social Justice, a non-profit that helps against social issues. In the six-year campaign, 7,200 locks have been distributed. ....

ST. LOUIS A unique partnership in St. Louis is expected to be announced Tuesday afternoon.
Mayor Lyda Krewson, Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson, Board of Alderman President Lewis Reed and others are scheduled to announce they re joining forces with the campaign Lock it for Love.
The gun safety campaign is run by Women s Voices Raised for Social Justice. It focuses on handing out gun locks and providing gun safety education in hopes of preventing unintentional shootings.
According to a press release, free gun locks will be available at 30 fire stations in the city and area at libraries. ....
