Speech and Language Development Center partners with Orange County Community Foundation for "Empowering Possibilities" Giving Day

Speech and Language Development Center (SLDC) and 9 aligned nonprofits will partner with the Orange County Community Foundation (OCCF) on May 20 for Empowering Possibilities, a collaborative Giving Day to support people with disabilities living in Orange County. The 24-hour online effort aims to raise $100,000 for 10 nonprofits offering a range of education and supportive services, skills training and counseling, and community outreach programs.
Within Orange County, there are over 250,000 people living with disabilities, making up 8.5% of the community2. This Giving Day is an opportunity for donors to collectively support the nonprofit organizations providing the tools and resources necessary for Orange County’s disabled residents to achieve success and independence. At SLDC, we provide education and therapy to children and adults with special needs in an environment that nutures growth, inspires achievement and maximizes their potential. In recognition of Armed Forces Day, the Orange County Museum of Art is offering military service members and up to five household members a chance on Saturday to participate in a morning of art appreciation and enjoy a free lunch during “See Art, Make Art.”
Guests will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a guided tour of select works in the museum, where they will explore the different ways artists use visual compositions to invite conversations on theme, subject matter and more. Afterward, participants will be asked to create their own works of art.
Presented by OCMA, in coordination with Blue Star Museums, the event concludes with free complimentary boxed lunches that can be enjoyed outside on museum grounds or taken to go. ....

Twenty-year-old Lucie Courtois, who has written her first children’s book, celebrated the fruits of her labor at a signing event Friday afternoon outside of Lido Village Books in Newport Beach
Getting to this point for the 2020 Corona del Mar High School graduate might seem like a miracle in and of itself. She currently has some vision in her left eye but none in her right.
The Corona del Mar resident was born with corneal opacities and has received more than 20 corneal transplants. She began to use the services of Blind Children’s Learning Center in Santa Ana as an infant. ....
