During its June 1 meeting, the San Marcos City Council approved Ordinance 2021-45, on the first of two readings, which requires registration of lobbyists and periodic reporting of contacts made by lobbyists with elected city officials, city board and commission members and city employees. Ordinance 2021-45 was made to improve transparency regarding city business and services to the public. It is also meant to retain the public s trust in the city and city officials. In order to do that, the ordinance limits the relationship city officials have with lobbyists and required organizations, such as the San Marcos Police Officers Association and the San Marcos Professional Firefighters Association. It requires these organizations to register as lobbyists themselves since they have support or are supporting a public official. ....
After being added to its May 18 agenda, City Council debated if the cite-and-release ordinance should be dismissed and whether or not the ordinance has been the cause of enhanced crime in San Marcos. The council voted to approve the cite-and-release ordinance on March 3, 2020. The ordinance places limitations on law enforcement s ability to arrest civilians for low-level crimes such as possession of fewer than four ounces of marijuana, petty theft, driving with an invalid license, graffiti or any class C misdemeanor other than public intoxication, assault or family violence. Councilmember Shane Scott indicated the council was not currently dismissing the cite-and-release ordinance, but instead, were beginning a discussion regarding possible modifications to it. ....
The Philadelphia School Partnership on Tuesday will name Stacy Holland, a nonprofit leader with broad education experience in Philadelphia, as its new executive director. Holland said she was poised to lead PSP, an organization that has raised $120 million for Philadelphia charter, private, and traditional public schools since it was founded 10 years ago, through a crucial time. âCOVID is the greatest educational crisis in our lifetime, one that has impacted all students in Philadelphia, especially students of color,â Holland said. âBut it also presents us with a tremendous chance to reimagine how we provide high-quality educational options that are urgently needed for all children.â ....
Thursday, April 22, 2021 The San Marcos City Council voted to approve an amendment to the Community Development Block Grant-Mitigation Action Plan to designate projects and allocate funding. The funding was awarded in response to the 2015 Memorial Day Weekend Floods and is intended to support projects that will reduce the risk of loss of life and damage to property in the future, prioritizing lower income areas while addressing the most impacted areas from the 2015 floods. Fourteen million dollars will be allocated to the Blanco Riverine Regional Flood Mitigation project, providing a berm and relief channel to lessen the risk of flooding in southwest San Marcos from the Blanco River. ....
