UW installs strikingly unique public sculpture at new Hans Rosling Center for Population Health

At nearly 7 feet tall, “The Seated IV” first graced the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s facade in September 2019 as part of a commission titled The NewOnes, will free Us. Four “Seated” sculptures by Wangechi Mutu were the first works to take up the positions on The Met’s facade since it was completed in 1902.
On Monday, Jan. 25, one of the four storied bronze sculptures was installed at the north side of the new Hans Rosling Center for Population Health at the corner of W Stevens Way and 15th Ave NE. ....

Just as salmon swim against the current, a team of researchers faced a difficult journey on their quest to answer a decades-old problem: what causes the death of coho salmon that are exposed to stormwater runoff?
After five years, the UW-led research team has successfully traced the previously unexplained coho salmon mortality to a formerly unknown chemical that is a byproduct of an industrial chemical widely used to preserve rubber tires of which three billion are produced annually around the world. ....

In a deep and dark December, an eagerly awaited event brightened the early morning in a UW Medicine loading zone. The first shipment of COVID-19 vaccinations had arrived.
The 3,900 doses had been marked priority boarding for their FexEx flight to Seattle, after being trucked in insulated, dry ice containers out of a Pfizer BioNTech facility in the upper Midwest. ....
