The CHIRP summer concerts in Ballard Park has two fun shows this week, starting with Tuba Skinny on Tuesday. Formed in 2009, Tuba Skinny has steadily evolved from a loose collection of street musicians into a solid ensemble, dedicated to bringing the traditional New Orleans sound to audiences around the world. Drawing on a wide range of musical influences, from spirituals to Depression-era blues, from ragtime to traditional jazz, their sound evokes the rich musical heritage of their New Orleans home. The band has gained a loyal following through their distinctive sound, their commitment to reviving long-lost songs, and their barnstorming live performances.

The blues scene kicks into high gear as the free Black-Eyed & Blues Fest returns to Hartford’s Bushnell Park on Saturday and Sunday.
The Mighty Soul Drivers start things off Saturday. They bring the classic soul sounds of Memphis, Muscle Shoals and points South to the hills of New England. The Mighty Soul Drivers take their inspiration from the giants of Southern soul and combine that with contemporary tunes. The band won the 2015 Connecticut Blues Society Blues Challenge and went on to represent the state at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis.
